Statement of PurposeHello. My name is Thomas Junker. I am solely responsible for the content of The Unofficial Wang VS Information Center.
I provide these pages principally for the benefit of present users of Wang VS systems, with presumptive collateral benefit to Wang Laboratories, Inc., various third party vendors, employees and ex-employees of the various companies that are or have been involved in the VS marketplace, and anyone merely interested in Wang Laboratories, Inc. and its VS line of computer systems or related issues.
Wang Laboratories, Inc. has no official participation in these pages or control over their content, nor do these pages represent any opinion or position of Wang Laboratories, Inc. except as reporting of information of interest to the VS community. I have never worked for Wang Laboratories, Inc., but since April 1998 I have had a consulting relationship with Wang.
These pages do not represent or endorse any products or services of third party vendors. Any information provided on such products or services is offered as information and/or news of potential use to users of VS systems. Exceptions include COBOL ReSource and Storcase, both of which I now represent.
I make no warranties as to the accuracy or actual usefulness of any information contained in these pages. I merely report and opine as I see fit, for the reading pleasure of those who may visit here. This effort was originally prompted by a desire on my part to slow down the decline of the VS market, single-handedly if necessary. While I think the Website has had some effect in this regard, it is impossible to measure.
I am one of the few real VS experts still actively working in the VS world. My principal orientation is software, though I have a good familiarity with hardware in general and much (but not all) of the VS hardware. SCSI, including Wang's peculiar implementations, is one of my more intense specialties.
I first met the VS in 1984, and have worked with a number of different systems in a variety of industries and applications. My first exposure was to a VS80 running OS 6.21.xx. Recent experience is on VS12000/16000 and 5000/6000/6230/6230T/6780 running OS 7.52 and 7.53.
My background is heavy on the systems side, with extensive programming directed at utilities, interfaces, code generation, programming and systems tools, intersystem interactions, diagnosis and tuning, troubleshooting, and system administration and planning issues. I have been the in-house resource of last resort for systems running on VS80, 85, 65, 300, 7380, 8280, 5000, 6000, 10000, and 12000 on OS versions through 7.53.01.
On the application side I have worked with distribution, manufacturing, insurance and legal systems, writing new components, maintaining old ones, and unsnarling the inevitable problems that afflict complex systems.
I am fluent in BASIC, COBOL, Procedure and PACE DD/AB/HLI, and dabble in Glossary and Assembler when necessary. I am thoroughly familiar with DMS/TX soft recovery, InterTask Messaging, VSSUBS, and virtually any form of VS file data manipulation. I can extract and reformat VS data for movement to other platforms.
I also speak SQL, Visual Basic, BAT, and Spanish.
I have been in programming and systems for 40 years, a significant portion of which was spent designing and implementing real time communications operating systems and components in assembler language on 16-bit minicomputers. I have written from scratch: multitasking operating systems, device drivers, text editors, macro processors, code generators, parsers, linkers, special purpose assemblers and compilers, device emulators, debuggers, and many utilities.
I can receive encrypted communications:
