[Y2K has passed. You may find this page informative, but if you still have not remediated your VS applications you've pretty much missed the boat. For information on moving VS COBOL applications to Unix without rewriting, and retaining virtually all the good things about the VS environment, see the page on COBOL ReSource.]

The VS is Y2K compliant. Some people may need to read that three times. If anyone in your organization has raised a question about the VS and Y2K, show them this Web page.

The VS Year 2000 Operating System has been in the field for some time and is stable. The only catch is that some very old models of VS are not supported by the Y2K OS. If you have one of those very old models, be aware that you should have upgraded it a long time ago, that you have probably been spending a lot more than necessary to keep the old system running, and instead of considering a VS upgrade as an unpleasant necessity you should consider it a windfall that the old one carried you this far.

All VS systems first delivered after 1987 can be upgraded with Year 2000 compliant software:

VS Models Supported by Y2K OS
  • VS 5000 and VS 6000 including VS 6230
  • VS 300, VS 7000, VS 8000 and VS 9000 models
  • VS 10000 models and the VS 12000 Model 550
  • VS 12000 Models
  • VS 16000 Models
  • VS 18000 Models

If you have a model supported for Y2K, no VS hardware upgrade is necessary.

Hardware upgrade paths to Year 2000 compatible models are available for transitioning older systems:

VS Models Not Supported by Y2K OS
  • VS 50 and VS 80
  • VS 85, VS 90 and VS 100
  • VS 5, 15, 25, and 45
  • VS 6, 65 and 75E

If you have one of the unsupported VS models, an upgrade even to the smallest of the supported models will give you a substantial performance increase except in the case of VS85/90/100, where an upgrade to the next-to-smallest supported model will yield a performance increase. That is to say, virtually all the supported models offer substantially better performance than all the unsupported models. Along with better performance, the upgraded VS will generally also have higher reliability, a smaller footprint, lower nominal maintenance costs and lower power consuption.

Wang's Century Software Package (CSP) is available at no additional charge to current [Feb 2001 note: this may no longer be the case], up-to-date Wang Software Maintenance customers, and includes:

Wang intends to make OS 7.53 the single supported OS well before 2000 [they did] (and for good reason) and is encouraging all customers to move up to that level with the incentive of these new, bundled resources. I for one am greatly relieved to see the first major evidence that Wang is recognizing the value of bundling basic features that help the VS deliver on its potential.

Important Y2K documents were made available by Wang in November, 1997:
