RS/6000 Systems

08-Jul-02 NOTE: RS/6000 offerings are on hold due to aggressive pricing on the part of IBM. We are presently referring clients directly to IBM in most cases while we attempt to become an IBM Reseller. If you have particular RS/6000 (pServer) needs, contact us and we will advise you.

We offer new and pre-owned RS/6000 systems in connection with COBOL ReSource. If your budget is limited or you need to evaluate COBOL ReSource in your own shop without spending a lot for the unix platform, a pre-owned system may be perfect. If yours is a small or medium size business in which a VS has been the enterprise processor our low-cost RS/6000 systems may well be able to replace your VS and increase performance at prices lower than you would pay for PC LAN servers.

Models of pre-owned systems that we integrate and upgrade to robust configurations include:

The 43P machines are PC-size but very powerful when properly configured. They are also presently the best value for the dollar in pre-owned RS/6000 systems. New RS/6000 models suitable for replacing VS systems include the 44P line, the B70/H70, B80/H80 and F80.

The 43P 7043-140 in 200 MHz detailed above has roughly the processing power of a VS16850, if not more. In 332 MHz it should outperform a VS18950.

The 43P 7248-132 in 133 MHz is very suitable for developers, whether individuals or small groups, and possibly for some small businesses. Its performance is roughly on a par with the VS12550/12650.

NOTE: In small RS/6000 models the numbers of users that may be supported will usually be limited by the physical memory capacities. As a very rough rule of thumb, figure that 2 MHz and 8 MB are required for each interactive user.

The new F80 released by IBM in 2000, if loaded with six 500 MHz processors, is roughly like having ten VS18950s in a deskside server box. (Woops! The F80 only lasted 1 year before it was superceded. Newer models with multiple 667 or 750 MHz or 1.3 GHz processors are now available)

We offer compatible external RAID in Ultra-Wide (40 MB/sec) and Ultra2-Wide (80 MB/sec) in both rackmount and tower configurations. Capacities range from 12 GB or 27 GB in RAID0 and 8 GB or 18 GB in RAID5 to about 200 GB in single enclosures. Prices are custom quoted and can range from under US$1,000 for a small unit to under US$15,000 for a high-end unit. Many configurations can be built using some or all pre-owned parts, which can result in very functional and affordable RAID priced toward the lower end of the price range.

For RAID units we use Kingston/StorCase enclosures and removable drive assemblies, Infortrend RAID controllers, and IBM SCSI disk drives. We can also work with Seagate disk drives and other brands of RAID controllers.
